Astronomical tablets have been a major focus of study by historians science since the middle 20th century. Building upon pioneering work E. S. Kennedy, O. Neugebauer, and others, recent scholars applied range techniques drawn from exact sciences (e.g., computer-aided statistical analysis tabular data to uncover mathematical functions underlying table’s construction), cognitive studies examination how practitioners use table what makes user-friendly or not), manuscript layout visual clues tables, such as presence color an indicator specific final digits numbers in column that indicate nature table) answer questions about construction, use, transmission astronomical tables knowledge they incorporate. For past 20 years so, José Chabás, often working collaboration with B. R. Goldstein, has at forefront on early European tables.
